The Municipal Offices were vacated in 1975 when New Walk Centre opened. In the early 1980s they became the Willie Thorne Snooker Centre. In recent years the building was known as Attenborough House.

The Council Returns

Over time, New Walk Centre became structurally unsound and had to be vacated. In 2014 the city’s municipal headquarters moved back to Charles Street. Now called City Hall, the old building houses around 600 staff along with the office of the city´s elected Mayor.

A Return to its Former Glory

Conservation specialists, architects and contractors worked together to restore the building to its former glory. Original archive drawings were consulted to ensure many of the building’s fine Art Deco features were retained or recreated.  The old rates hall, now called Attenborough Hall, is now a stylish function room, restored in a 1930s style.
